Join the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office as an Intern

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to offer paid internship opportunities to students interested in exploring a career in the field of criminal justice.

The Enforcement Operations Bureau, Custody Operations Bureau, Administration, and the Coroner’s Unit have projects available that will enhance your ability to explore opportunities for diverse and rewarding career paths. There are both sworn and non-sworn, or professional positions within the Sheriff’s Office with career opportunities.

By participating in an internship program you will enhance your education and obtain first-hand knowledge of how laws are applied, how law enforcement organizations are administered and how personnel effectively work to serve the residents of Monterey County.

Should you choose to pursue a career in law enforcement, your internship experience will be helpful to you in the following ways: Determine which classification is the right fit for you! Give you first-hand knowledge as you go through the application and interview process. Create a network of professionals to help you in your chosen field

    The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is developing a paid internship program and willing to work with:

    Students from universities who are enrolled in the Criminal Justice Program (may perform a one or two-term internship at the Sheriff’s Office)

    Learning about administrative functions and basic law enforcement

    In most cases, students will work directly with the Sheriff’s Administration but not limited to such.

    Interns can also be assigned to work with the Detective Division and spend time in the following units: Robbery, CAPS (Crimes Against Persons), MAC (Major Assault Crimes), Crimes Against Property, Juvenile, Autos, and Burglary.

    Assist pathologist and autopsy techs during examinations. Assist with maintaining a clean and organized autopsy suite, and morgue inventory.

    The intern must be a high school graduate. The intern must pass a background check and have basic knowledge/interest in human anatomy or criminal justice. Must be able to work with strong, foul orders, the ability to move/lift bodies, and stand for long periods of time.

Explorer Program

Monterey County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post 511 offers young men and women, aged 14-21 and having graduated the 8th grade, the opportunity to gain firsthand experience working with law enforcement.  The program is designed to bring together young adults interested in law enforcement careers, and help them build character and leadership skills.
