Eyewitnesses and law enforcement personnel from multiple agencies came together to locate and arrest a juvenile who attempted to rob a person that was visiting Monterey County.
At about 10:30 AM on Saturday May 9th, 2026, deputies were called to the 26300 block of Carmel Rancho Lane for a report of a robbery. Multiple witnesses called 911 to report that a juvenile had attempted to steal a purse and other personal items from a woman. It was also being reported that the juvenile was being chased by another witness.
Deputies arrived and located the juvenile suspect who led them on a foot pursuit through local Carmel businesses in the Carmel Rancho Shopping Center. The juvenile was able to immediately elude arrest. Thanks to information provided by additional witnesses and assistance from Carmel Police Department Officers, the juvenile was found and detained near Carmel Middle School. Custody was turned over to Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies.
The suspect was identified as a 15-year-old male juvenile.
Sheriff Tina Nieto stated, “While the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the willingness of community members to assist during emergencies, we do not encourage the public to physically intervene or place themselves in potentially dangerous situations. For their own safety, we ask community members to instead focus on being good witnesses by promptly calling 911, providing accurate descriptions, and sharing information that can assist responding law enforcement personnel. In this case, it was those witness statements and calls to 911 that led to the successful and safe apprehension of our suspect.”
At the time of the investigation, the victim in this incident had left the area. The female victim contacted the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office the following day and confirmed she had been the victim of an attempted robbery.
The juvenile male was released to the custody of his father and a request for prosecution against the juvenile has been forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office for attempted robbery and resisting/delaying a peace officer.
We wish to thank the Carmel Police Department and California State Parks Rangers for their assistance during this investigation.
