TYPE OF INCIDENT: Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Issues Statement Regarding Social Media Reports of Incident That Did Not Occur

LOCATION: 1410 Natividad Road, Salinas, California

MEDIA CONTACT: Andres Rosas, Commander; Phone: 831-261-5492; Email: rosasae@countyofmonterey.gov

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is aware of social media posts and public concern regarding reports of shots fired, a vehicle pursuit, and the arrest of an armed subject at Manzanita Park in Prunedale. We would like to clarify that this was not an actual law enforcement incident, but rather a planned training exercise conducted by dispatch personnel.

The scenario was broadcast over a designated training talk group that was being used strictly for training purposes and not used to broadcast actual law enforcement radio traffic. The exercise was intended to simulate the types of critical incidents that emergency dispatchers may encounter while coordinating responses with local law enforcement agencies.

These realistic training exercises are an important part of preparing dispatchers and emergency personnel to respond effectively during high-stress incidents involving multiple agencies and rapidly evolving situations. The goal of the exercise was to provide valuable hands-on training and improve coordination and communication skills in a controlled environment.

We understand how hearing portions of simulated radio traffic without context could cause concern, particularly when shared on social media. We want to reassure the community that if an actual incident involving a significant public safety threat had occurred, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office would utilize its official communication channels to promptly notify and inform the public of any potential safety concerns or protective actions.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to transparency, public safety, and ensuring our personnel receive the training necessary to effectively serve and protect our community.
